Yeah, Japanese culture has a very unhealthy obsession with ceaselessly positive affirming friendships that contain no conflict or substance beyond empty "gambate!" encouragement. In American children's media, friends often disagree and have to resolve their differences. In anime and jrpgs, friends exist to have low-intensity conflict free zany funtimes with, or to have high intensity conflict free supportive fighting for honor times with. There's no room for meaningful discourse between equals in such a conformist society. A lot of my Asian friends in college tried to engage me in these weird, empty conversations that I had absolutely no interest in. Like, bitch, I've known you for a year, I don't want to talk about the weather. I don't think they really "get" friends as a society yet.
