It really is great. For both gameplay and story reasons.

1) It has very complex and vast character creation system. Some 20 classes (and in each class there are 3 arechetypes apart from basic, just to spice things up), quite different from one another, but also very customizable. What I liked especially is the level cap of 20 - it makes every level-up much more meaningful and the increase in power is very visible and thus satysfying.

2) Difficulty - you can change the difficulty in any moment in game and tweak almost all parts of things that constitute said difficulty. It helps you tailor the game to be just hard enough to be satysfying and you can play safe in knowledge that if there is some unbalanced encounter, or you've fucked up your developement you don't have to kill your save. It's also satysfying when you see how your knowledge of game systems improve so that you can treat previously higher difficulty as a baseline.

3) The debate between RTwP and Turn-Based has finally been solved. Just have both. I can't even begin to explain how elated I am due to this. I get all the fun of turn based combat, but whenever I feel I'm dealing with small fish I turn to RTwP so the game never becomes a drag. It also is another method of adjusting the difficulty as turn-based is easier (also you get to actually watch the spell and combat animation). Moreover if you have had problems with other crpgs due to the RTwP, Kingmaker serves as a learning ground that doesn't block your story progression. From now on I will list a lack of dual battle modes as a detriment to any other WRPG.

4) It seems as if the game was made by people who really do play tabletop Pathfinder. Many maps (although somewhat connected to the main story) actually could serve as a one-shot campaing. For example, during troll troubles quest, when exploring the Narlmarches, you encounter a map with a ruined dwarven guardpost. You slowly learn about it's story and it's last guardians. Then you collect all the pieces of an artifact to unlock a mechanism in the monument of a dwarven god and get your prize. At the same time you of course deal with few different combat encounters and get to make a decision as a baron. The main quest is great in itself, but those little encounters make it a game that you can play slowy. A map a day. That is usefull when you have a job and can't put 12h/day into gaming, but still want that feeling of magic and adventure.

5) The game is complete. You lose nothing by not buying the DLCs. "Varnhold's Host" is just another adventure for which you make a new party, "Beneath the Stolen Lands" is a dungeon crawler, useful if you want to check out how different parties or classes feel.

Yeah, I want games to cater to my play style, especially since in King Maker it was RTwP FIRST!!! TB was added later, literally all the encounters were designed for RTwP and yet the addition of TB feature massively improved the game. I say - EVERY party based RPG will be improved by adding the option of turn-based combat, even as an afterthought.

Having both is actually kinda great
You can switch on the fly between battles that you don't really want to pay attention and those that you want.
There was a lot of times where i used turn based mod to place my characters right and then switch to real time.
It solved so much problem with pathfinding and positioning.

It's like the oldschool infinity engine crpgs except it's based off the Pathfinder tabletop game instead of D&D, and is more contemporary. What is so good about this game is it combines real time with turn based combat by a simple toggle and it's such a huge and obvious improvement that it's a wonder why nobody has ever done this before. Build customization is the best i've seen and there is a LOT to choose from. Other than that it's a solid wrpg but not without fault. The game is a bit jank, bugs are prevalent, and the PS4 version is practically unplayable unless you like crashes ever 30 minutes. Still, it's one of the best modern crpgs you can play and the sequel is shaping up to be better in damn near every way so now is a good time to get into if you're interested.

The narrative design makes it the worst.
It actively removes roleplaying from conversations to railroad them into the way the writer wants the conversation to go. Alignment for choices are also inconsistent.
Many choices that are logical or would be interesting aren't present.
This actively creates a dissonance and takes you out of the experience. Making it feel less like a roleplaying game.

I dont know anon kingmaker has lots of problems buts a fucking good first attempt. Unlike poe which feels dead inside. And I really dont like the setting in pathfinder.

Wrath may have the opportunity to really do something for crpgs. Unlike Obsidian which just left PoE and Tyranny to just die, avowed I dont even know what they want to make. Might be a cool fps rpog but thats a whole different genre.

Outside the awful kingdom, Kingmaker is a comfy as fuck party dungeon romp.

Yes! Nobody ever dogs on Pathfinder for that, but it really does have a super bland setting and there is not much variation at all. I was expecting the mountain region maps to be rocky and snowy for some IWD vibes, but it's just more indistinguishable forested area.

Not really. The game is a test of patience until you develop stockholms syndrome for it.

It's a terrible combination of inexperience, lack of talent and bein overambitious. This ripples throughout the game, including the technical. The game was an inexcusable shitshow for months and even now it's barely in an acceptable state.

I have absolutely no idea how anyone can think this game is amazing. The game is flat out riddled with amateur mistakes that drag the game down. Hard. We're talking levels of incompetence even a junior designer should be embarrased to make.

As a systems designer I can tell you why. It's because they don't know how to design progression. Be it currency or loot progression. This is a very very common mistake junior designers make. Inflation and rare drops found in random barrels in a town isn't some revolutionary design decision. It's a very common mistake more experienced designers typically have to correct (or are in charge of to begin with).
The only other possible excuse they have is if they didn't have enough iteration time. This is possible since the entire game has barely any polish and signs of proper iteration. But still too big of a mistake to be just that.

I know that some people can overlook massive issues if there are certain elements that tickle their fancy enough (even if those elements aren't great). Minecraft is a good example of another game like it, especially at release.

The very reason I am so hard on them is because I'm so passionate. Everyone always praises me for my work and how easy I am to work with, but thank you for your baseless conjecture.

That said, I probably have myself to blame since I bought in to the hype an expected something legit great. Not an overscoped mess.

Kingdom management is bad and it doesn't require further explanation.
Writing is just bland, average, not good, some bad bits, but for the most part average.
The only reason why anyone would consider combat bad is because it's RTwP, but you have TB mode now, or because mobs have bloated stats, but you can always reduce this through difficulty options.

Cope. There's nothing interesting about the encounters in Kingmaker. Horribly balanced obviously refers to the ac bloat. The only thing that even could be interpreted as hard in the game, is the character building. A new player can just side step this whole issue by looking up a build, he'll easily be able to complete the game on challenging.

Yeah the rotating camera is really scuffed atm. As much as I like Wrath and think it's in many ways better than Kangmaker, they will probably need to delay it. It's really rough at some parts in the bet. They're stretched too thin by doing demon/lich paths while also having azata/angel etc.

Mostly the character creator and to be honest there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. A lot of the fun of the game is autistically making characters and see how they work in combat. I don't know why people try to overate the game in other areas though.

The kingmaker aspect is a gimmick that, after a first playthough, you'll be putting on auto. Your companions are all bland. The story is boring (not helped by the fact that it's a fey adventure which are inherently boring unless you're a woman or like drugs) and there's barely any choice and consequence through either gameplay or dialog.

It's one of those "all-arounder" WRPGs that does a lot of things in a mediocre fashion but ultimately fills that hunger one might want from playing an actual table-top RPG campaign.

Fiery Body blocks their stat drain, if you didn't get Tristian killed, he can cast that then tank the swarms while spamming Fire Storm with the maximize + empower rod. Octavia can also potentially cast it if you learned the spell on her.

When I started the game it was some infuriating BS at times and the encounters were just whack. However after burning a few dozen hours and understanding how it works I have to say I am enjoying it more and more. Also helps that my shitty enchanter wizard has finally come into his own and can push and pull anything on the field. Haste and Mass Enlarge are great too.

So either its Stockholm Syndrome or this game is actually pretty decent once you understand how it works.

Yes. The main draw of the game comes from understanding the tools at your disposal and finding ways to leverage them to overcome the obstacles the game throws at you. The issue is that the game tends to assume you at least have some sort of idea how D&D or Pathfinder work and lacks an in-depth tutorial. A lot of people who consider themselves rpg veterans because they finished Dragon Age Origins once will pick it up, pick Challenging despite the menu saying it's intended for people who have previous experience with the Pathfinder system, then when it turns out they can't just bruteforce their way through choose to cry about it on the internet instead of either learning the ruleset or lowering the difficulty.

Spending an hour or two reading up Pathfinder basics on the SRD is probably enough to get a grip on the game. Once you understand what each ability score does, how bonuses stack, the different types of ACs and saves and have a basic grasp of spellcasting mechanics you're set. If you have the theorycrafting autism bug you can sink hundreds of hours into just experimenting with what your characters can do and finding cool synergies. I for one completely ignored Jubilost on my first run then realized the potential that his ability to cast personal buffs on other people has and had a lot of fun messing with that, and that's just one example.

Healslutting is a waste of a slot especially when Tristian can be built into a death ray. When respecced into fire domain he ended up as the 2nd highest damage dealer in my party only overtaken by Trollslayer. He can be made to do more useful things than healslutting even with his default domains, but it takes getting to the higher spell levels to get some good offense going.

At low levels, yes, which is why respec into Fire is necessary if you want to give him more offensive options in the early game. Vanilla he starts getting useful offensive options with stuff like Flame Strike and Hellfire Ray which are on the Cleric spell list and can be put in any slot. Keeping him as a healbot at that point is just a waste when he could be oneshotting bosses instead.

Having played around with vanilla companion builds on the higher difficulties, I honestly feel like Tristian is the only one where I'd argue you really need a respec to make the most out of his potential, and that's just due to his shitty domain choices that completely invalidate one of his main class features. Otherwise, outside of cases like early Unfair where you really need every advantage you can get, the admittedly dubious starter builds companions get aren't too crippling. They're at least viable, and some are just retard strong out of the box like Ekundayo.

I wouldn't qualify it as a tactical game but the importance of your exact build is highly exaggerated. On Challenging pretty much everything that isn't randomly choosing feats is viable and even Hard lets you get away with basic optimization that's nowhere near monk/vivi/dd chimera level. The tactics come in when you check the combat log and enemy information and see how you can best use the tools at hand to deal with the encounter, builds simply specialize you in certain toolsets.

The meme that you need to copy builds from some random internet autist is stale and mostly comes from people who only ever copied meme theorycratfted builds themselves that they used to bruteforce their way through Normal once instead of learning how to actually play the game.

I mean, what else would you expect people to actively discuss about several years after release? Experimenting with what you can do within the constraints of the rule system is fun and people enjoy sharing their experiences. It is still in no way necessary for beating or enjoying the game nor the only tactical aspect of the game.

Take an encounter like King Fatfuck and Engelidis for example. I've seen a lot of people crying that Overwhelming Presence is locking down their party and the annoying snake woman is spamming spells while having 999 AC. Their whole meme can be shut down with Holy Aura, a cleric spell that both Harrim and Tristian can cast by default at that level and protects against Overwhelming Presence and Engelidis has shit touch AC that any spellcaster should be able to hit with a chunky ray powered up by a metamagic rod. You don't need a specific build to do any of these things, just checking what the enemies are using to hurt you, what their weaknesses are and reading your spellbook to see what could help. In this case the only thing build optimization does is end the fight with one ranged touch attack instead of two and we're talking about optimization on the level of "I should probably pick Spell Penetration instead of Power Attack on my wizard". This applies to pretty much every other encounter in the game, too.

- On the bright side the character and class creation is neat, its my first d20 game after NWN2 and it really good. The story and narrative are good as well, playing the game for the first time will get you interested in seeing it through. Companions and characters in general are above average, but considering that the bar is pretty fucking low that’s not really reassuring
- But then you fucking see it’s a Russian game. Borderline sadistic encounter design with mindbreakingly retarded quests. Kingmaker could be great, not even considering it had 0 competition. On the other hand a bunch of Ivans whose life is mostly being assfucked by champagne bottle and masturbating with barbed wire while praying to Putin managed to put to shame former RPG giants
