Its just johto again. Its the illusion of choice.

Theres even main paths going through the routes, meaning you will only progress by following the path.

Additionally you will be forced to stop at city's for story events, and not allowed to just jump to the top of the map at the begginning of the game.

The only "Open world" feature is being able to challenge gyms in any order, but if your forced to still go to the town, all you are doing is skipping a battle or two.

Every "new" feature from SV we had since gen 1. Only new thing is terratype.
