I appreciate Rock and Roll Nightclub and enjoy a few songs from it like the title track, European Vegas, and One More Tear To Cry (Only You doesn't count because it was already a Makeout Video Tape song). 2 has much tighter songwriting and better songs and performances in general. That's Mac probably trying his absolute hardest writing good catchy guitar driven songs with decently interesting lyrics and silky smooth singing. Salad Days is basically just as good with songs like the title track and Chamber of Reflection being highlights but it shows a slight decline in focus and dipping into lazier more simple songs. Another One is peak lazy Mac just completely phoning it in. This Old Dog finally showed Mac trying some things he hadn't done on a Mac Demarco record and kind of going back to Makeout Video tape levels of anything goes and then with Here Comes The Cowboy it's a mixture of lazy songwriting, actually pretty good songs like On The Square and Nobody, and pure fucking around bullshit that shouldn't make it to a proper album and should be left for demo/outtake records.
No idea what the next album will be but I'll check it out.
