here's a good recommendation website, I found my current laptop (acer nitro 5) on there. $600 + a $30 RAM upgrade and it runs most vidya fine (can play halo infinite without any noticeably bad framerate or graphics).
I don't recommend that particular model because it's selling way above MSRP and I've had problems with the fans and keyboard, but that sounds like the price range for what you want to look at

to speed up an old laptop you have to install a lightweight linux distro on it and replace the HDD for an SSD. everything else will either be placebo or marginal gains

Is there a trash mail service I can use for github accounts? I need to post an issue there but I don't have an account yet and don't want one. Last time I had to do this it was easy to set one up with a trash mail but now they automatically flag me as spam. Cockli is invite only too and I can't think of any mail providers with simple setup.

I couldn't Google the problem because I'm not entirely sure I can properly describe the issue. The right edge of my screen is too "long." The cursor can go past the bezel of the monitor, and I have to drag the mouse almost a full second to get it to appear back in the display area. I didn't have this issue before, so I don't know what changed, or even what to look for to fix it. In the picture, if the blue is the actual screen real estate of my monitor, then the cursor is somehow able to go to where the arrow is. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Figures I'd find out the solution shortly after posting. Turns out Nvidia control panel set up a second virtual display, so my computer was behaving as if I had two monitors, even though I only had one. I don't know if a program or game changed that setting or something, because I certainly didn't do it.

Can mpc-hc really not auto select embedded subs? I have a playlist of episodes running and I have to manually select the subs for every new episode. Can I fix this? Tried with internal, vsfilter/directvobsub and xysubfilter subtitle renderer.

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop, but I know some new cpus were announced recently. How long will it take till we see the new cpus in laptops? I'm looking at getting an MSI with R7 5800H and a 5500m. Are the new cpus worth waiting for? I don't need top of the line perf, but if there are some major improvements in perf or power usage I would rather get it. I don't particularly care about the gpu and I'm going to use linux if that matters.

My mum enjoys watching things on her TV, but most of the movies she wants to watch aren't available on the services she has access to.
I tried using plex but for some reason the TV(Panasonic) won't read the files, even if they show up.
Is there a relatively budget way I can set up a way that allows her to watch her desired movies/shows on her TV?

nowadays with hdmi it's trivial to connect a computer into a tv, you just plug it in and it works like a monitor
while i haven't used one myself, those little android sticks/boxes are probably the cheapest option, though personally i don't like the idea that they probably are going to be stuck on whatever version of android they shipped with forever, so i'd spring for something a bit more standard myself, like a compute stick or nuc or thin client or something, a small low power pc ("mini pc" is a common search term)

My father gave me an old laptop they don't use anymore and I took it to test Linux and shit. I knew it was a piece of garbage, I just didn't think it was such a fucking piece of shit. I'm talking about struggling to watch a Twitch stream at 480p. I threw a cheap SSD I had laying around and replaced Windows with Endeavour.

I'll just use it to watch shit on bed when I'm tired of sitting on my desktop pc. Is there anything else I could try beside the SSD thing and changing the OS? It would be cool if I could push it to play 720p streams without shitting itself.

After BOSD my video card now is listed as standard vga graphics adapter and is listed with a code 10 error "device cannot start". Besides that the image doesnt fill up the screen and there are horizontal blue line artifacts.

The clean reinstall stopped the fans from spinning at full speed and removed most of the blue artifacts but no progress besides that.
Obviously I'd think my video card died but after putting in an older gpu I had lying around it now faces the same problems and I doubt two of my gpus magically died at the same time.

What are you asking? A lot of programs ignore profiles and assume sRGB. So convert to sRGB first if you're uploading. DLing you're just fucked, I would think.

Convert to CIE and back is probably the easiest way to change color spaces,, if that where you're confused. You can figure out what to do with the values that are out of range yourself you dumb nigger.

I got my hands on a DELL P2417H monitor (for free, people threw it away with 'DV port does not work'). But it still works, at least partially, HDMI and VGA give video output.
When I power it, it goes okay for about 30 seconds, then it starts doing weird ghost flickering, as in it 'burns' the image displayed on screen for 2 seconds and everything else is blacked out, and this every (around) 10 seconds.
I opened it up and was met with broken tape (attaching electronics to the back of the screen), but I don't think this could be the cause.

Do you have any idea where I could start?
I read on DELL forums that you have to 'reset resolution by hand at every bootup' or 'set colors to 92%' but this did not work.

Not really, no. You can get a new plain brother for $100 or a combo for like $60 more. If you hardly ever use the thing it'll last you like a decade. You would spend so goddamn much on ink in that time, and the ink drying thing would make you want to murder a baby.

Capacitors make the voltage and signal more "stable", when capacitors fail they induce noise and weird shit happens.

Short answer: yes but there can be small snags here and there.
I for one run into a situation where the case fan had too short cable to reach the fan header on the motherboard. As a solution I got an extension for it.

personally i have never used an esd bracelet. it's supposed to prevent static elictricity, which in theory could short your motherboard. never happened to me before.

don't buy secondhand unless you're on a really tight budget. even then i would just wait until you can afford the parts new.

building your own pc means you get to choose the parts, most prebuilts have shit tier psu's for example. also you won't have unnessecary parts in your machine, so you might be able to save some money.

No. CPUs need to go in a board with the socket which has a BIOS that supports that generation of CPU. Memory comes in generations, boards support different kinds of memory, etc. Motherboads come in different shapes that fit in different cases, etc.

You have to read the specs. Tools like PCPartPicker are helpful as well. But it's up to you to check at the end of the day.

Modern HW is harder to mess up than it used to be. If you're good about grounding yourself before man-handling your stuff and aren't scooting around on carpet then you'll almost surely be fine without a strap.
The mat is and has always been autism unless you're working for a shop.

No reason you couldn't. Isolating a broken component and trying to send it back will be harder if everything is used and you're new at this, but it's certainly not impossible. It's possible to get scammed to, but just use your brain.

You get to pick exactly what goes into it. A lot of prebuilts have odd choices (at least for my needs). Some people like overclocking, and they need specific configurations to get the most out of it (this wont be you on your first build though, and it's an expensive hobby if you're doing it with new parts).

How exactly are my encrypted files extracted for my use during normal use of my computer?
Linux system with full disk encryption.
Presumably the entire partition is not fully decrypted and just laying there exposed but there's no noticeable delay in accessing files so I imagine they're not being decrypted on-the-fly.

twitch is a pretty resource heavy website, you can try streaming the video directly to a media player with yt-dlp or youtube-dl plus mpv and change the quality settings in mpv to something appropriate in mpv.conf (ie not gpu-hq with a gajillion shaders). make sure to limit the resolution to 720p

My very old i7 is getting these temperatures at 100% Load, sometimes over 85c~90c depending on the program(like video editing).

I'm not a complete tech illiterate but I also don't have much experience, but temps have been getting higher and higher over the years. My cooler is an h50 or h60(not sure), and I never changed thermal paste. Would change thermal paste helping this situation, or is it just a sign of a very old CPU?

As a side note, I do air dust it every few months, and I live in a hot place, so my usual temps are a little higher, but not high enough to idle at 50c, like has been happening lately.

Makes sense. So to finally answer that guy's question, if the feds stole his machine and wanted to get at the data on the disk, the way to do that would be to somehow extract the key from RAM (say, with a cold boot attack)?
And by "ripped off the disk" I meant the disk is decrypted and in-use by the OS, and the feds physically rip away anything covering the hard drive without cutting off power before using some kind of external apparatus to scan the disks to their own machines, which given your answer would not work.

Pretty much. Disks only ever store encrypted data, so access directly to the platters gives you the same encrypted soup.
This is just hypothetical, there are a hundred ways to attack a computer.
Since we assume physical access, feds can simply install a keyloggers inside your keyboard and be done with it, you'll type your passphrase at some point.

it's just crazy how the average ~23min file, and honestly I can't really tell any major quality difference between watching one or the other. but like one's 150mb and the other's 2.2gb

I try grab 720s or lower when I can, but sometimes for older or nicher stuff there's ONLY 1080 or bdrip or whatever and those are fucking massive

is there any convenient layman's method to downsize this stuff or am I better off just deleting some stuff I'm probably never going to watch again, buying new ehd, and leaving the compression to the professionals

It is fine in stills and simpler art, but with gradations, lots of movement, pans... the difference between 100mb and 2gb becomes clear.
This is still just a fraction of what a raw file with no compression would be, things will only get heavier with time. Just get yourself a couple of tbs, currently it seems like 14tb is the best bang for your buck.

There is also something grim about always having to rely on a connection for entertainment. By always being internet bound your PC becomes useless the moment it is disconnected from it.

whenever I try to use a ~ in the path it tells me it can't be found. does it have soemthing to do with where ffmpeg is running? heres the relevant script fragments
$xpref is just the input filename, that isn't the issue though since it works fine with an absolute path

path_to_converted_gif="~/Videos/created_gifs/"
ffmpeg <options> "$path_to_converted_gif$xpref.gif"

the output of this ends up as

ffmpeg <options> ~/Videos/created_gifs/file_name.gif

which gives me this error:

answered my own question by just trying every possible combination of quotes
don't wrap the path_to_converted_gif variable in quotes and it works

path_to_converted_gif=~/Videos/created_gifs/

it dawns on me i've had a similar issue in bash scriptuing before, but i don't think i've seen this mentioned in any of the doccumentation i've read. could someone explain why bash doesn't like having things wrapped in multiple quotes? does it actually store the " as part of a string when assigning the variable? I'm coming from a DOS/batch background, which doesn't do that and in fact requires variables to be wrapped in " when being assigned

i used to use musicolet, i found it to be the best but I didn't try all that many to be fully transparent. it definately lets you shuffle and has lock screen controls, iirc it even lets you customise exactly what controls you have on the lock screen.

these days I use plexamp, which is so far above all other players it's not funny, but it's not that viable if you don't want to host a server or have your PC running it 24/7 *also the plexamp app is technically paid, despite plex itself being free)

I got a Chinese x86_64 tablet a few years back and a portable Linux Mint install on a USB stick, and figured I'd boot the tablet into Linux Mint to make an image of the default Win10 install I've been using and maybe install a Linux on it (not sure if desktop Linux on touchscreens is viable yet). However, I ran into something weird: Although the BIOS does show it recognizes the USB stick (in USB Configuration it's listed as a Mass Storage Device), it gives no option to actually boot from the USB stick. look for a boot order and place usb hdd above the internal
check for a key you can press to bring up a list of drives to boot from (often something like F8, F9, F11, etc)
it's not impossible it doesn't support booting from usb, but it would be extremely unusual
make sure the drive work on another machine

It's UEFI. (I also noticed no 'legacy support'-like option in the BIOS, but I shouldn't need it.)

The device is not available in the boot order options (I can only choose the internal drive, some EFI shell (not related to the stick) or 'nothing'), even though it's listed as Mass Storage Device in the USB Configuration menu.

The BIOS contains a boot override option. The stick is not listed there.

By "I've used it on several other machines" I meant I booted into the Linux Mint install on those machines. I know both sticks work.

That's what I thought too, which is why I decided to ask. It just seems more likely that I'm being retarded than that this is actually blocked on a BIOS level. I've dealt with USB booting issues before, but in those cases I always get an option to at least try the USB device and the booting itself fails. I've never seen it just not present the option.

i'm not sure i've seen a machine that new that just plain doesn't support it, but broken support? sure
i have a 2016 laptop which can boot from usb, but is a pain in the ass to actually get it to do so, it's basically random chance whether it works or not
try other usb ports as well

I wish the thing had more USB ports. It has a single micro-USB port and that's it. Anyways, the BIOS clearly detects the Mass Storage Device so it's not a case of it being unaware of the device.

Are there any programs for generating a man page?

I've made some simple programs and I'd like to have man pages for them, but it seems ovely complex to learn for something that reallistcally only I am going to use.

Can I just copy the man page for another simple program and edit it to contain what I want? Even just opening them up shows me stuff that doesn't seem human-readable at first glance.

I use kiwi browser on mobile and edge on pc. I assume synchronized browser data on chrome and firefox wouldn't cover tampermonkey script specific stuff, but I might just be retarded.

I am thinking about buying a convertible for uni. I will mainly use it for taking notes on pdfs, writing code and office tasks.

Current options are a thinkpad yoga L13 and a surface pro 8.
For me, the pros and cons of those two are:

Surface pro 8
Pros:
120hz (60hz feels odd since I already use 144hz monitors at home)
according to online reviews, the writing feels way more natural than on other convertibles

Cons:
overpriced for the same specs
replacing the battery is very hard and annoying

Thinkpad Yoga L13:
Pros:
cheaper with better specs
easily replaceable battery

Cons:
only 60hz
less availability

Any suggestions or recommendations regarding these two or maybe other models?

Not the same thing, the yoga is a laptop while the surface is a tablet.

Thinkpad Yoga are still thinkpads so the hinge will last forever, there is also better parts availability in case something breaks and laptop keyboards are far better than those flappy things let alone thinkpad keyboards which have the longest key travel on average. Displays are thinkpad's weakness though.

Looks like it's "just" adware but bizarre that only 8 vendors noticed it was malicious.
You may need to wait a bit for AV vendors to update their databases, until then post about it to their forums to spread the word.

I want to access services on my home server such as Plex. Connecting via the browser gives an error, connected my to webserver doesn't display anything.
